HumanitiesAR is pleased to offer HumanitiesAR History Teacher Institute: North by East, a four-day residential institute for K-12 teachers. The June 12-15, 2024 Institute will be based on the ASU campus in the Humanities and Social Sciences building. The Institute seeks to bring together 25 K-12 teachers from across the state for an immersive exploration of the Northeast Arkansas region. This opportunity will bring you site-specific Arkansas history sessions; hands-on activities; classroom resources; and visits to historic sites, museums, and archives across the northeast region of Arkansas.
Content of the Institute will be discussion of history of the Northeast Arkansas region and its applications in the classroom. These discussions will be complemented both by conversations with noted experts and by engaging participants in hands-on lessons that are easily transferred to classroom activities. Other primary sessions of the institute will be field-based engagement at several historic sites in the area, including the A-State Heritage Sites of the Historic Dyess Colony/Johnny Cash Boyhood Home, Southern Tenant Farmers Museum, and the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum, along with a visit to the Parkin Archeological State Park. Using primary source materials in the classroom is another important content component with opportunities to conduct regional primary source research using the holdings of various museums and archives in the area.
HumanitiesAR is interested in selecting a group of engaged participants who are at different phases of their careers. HumanitiesAR also hopes to create an institute group that reflects a diversity of perspectives in terms of professional and life experience as well as the schools and communities in which participants work.
Applications are open from January 16 – February 16. The submission process is competitive and successful candidates will be notified by April 1 of the results. You can find more details and apply online.
