1. Understanding the Grants Process

We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. We support the humanities in Arkansas through public programs, community forums, partnerships, and grantmaking to nonprofit organizations for humanities-based projects statewide.

Our mission is to empower Arkansans to connect with the humanities by encouraging the discovery and understanding of our diverse and mutual experiences. Learn more about HumanitiesAR.

Quick Overview

  • All grant applications are submitted, reviewed, and approved through Foundant, our online grant management system.
  • All grant applications are due by 11:59 PM on the deadline date.
  • Grantees have up to one year to complete their project, expend funds, and submit all quarterly and final reports with proper documentation and receipts.
  • Grantees must submit all required materials within 60 days for Major Grants or 30 days for all other grants following the end of the grant period.
  • An organization that has received three (3) consecutive years of funding for the same project will not be allowed to apply for a grant for that project for two (2) consecutive years. The organization may apply for grants for other endeavors during the two (2) year period. Examples of the same project include, but are not limited to, the following: annual conferences, seminars, and/or workshops, media preproduction/production, and long-term exhibits on the same subject, just to name a few.
  • The Arkansas Humanities Council may determine that a grantee who fails to perform by the terms and conditions of their award’s grant agreement will be noncompliant. Read our noncompliance policy for more.

An organization may only have one grant open at any given time.

The Application Process

Before you apply for a grant, we encourage you to:

We’d love to talk with you before you submit an application to discuss any questions about your project, our guidelines, or the online grant process. We’re also happy to review your application before you formally submit it.

After you submit your grant application, one of our staff members will review it for compliance with NEH and HumanitiesAR grant guidelines. If we need additional information or clarification, we’ll reach out to the project director.
